The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee region

The Vendée enjoys a Mediterrean climate with long, hot sunny days from May through to September and beyond.
The historic town of Fontenay-le-Comte with its colourful Saturday market is 25 minutes away, and the medieval riverside village of Vouvant, 15 minutes away, is not to be missed.
Other major attractions in the area include:-
Futuroscope at Poitiers - dynamic cinema, 3-D films and futouristic archhitecture.
The Green Venice - Imagine being punted through cool, green waterways on a hot summer's day!
The Puy du Fou - son et lumière and spectacular historic re-enactments

La Chataigneraie area

Beaches:
The most well-known of the local beaches is the up-market resort of Les Sables d’Olonne, but there are plenty of other safe, sandy beaches with Life Guard supervision.

The Forest of Mervent:
Just down the road, on the way to Fontenay-le-Comte, is the beautiful Forest of Mervent, with its Adventure/Outdoor Centre, water sports, cycling, lakes, nature trails and bird life.

Ponies, Bicycles and Horse-Drawn Caravans:
Enjoy cycling to picturesque, hidden places? The South Vendée holds the secret. Or do you fancy a more gently wandering pace of life? Horse-drawn caravans or carriages or outings on horse-back are all available.

Restaurants:
We can recommend some brilliant eating places – from the top notch St Pierre at Moncoutant to the spectacularly situated Auberge MontMercure at St. Michel en Mercure, atop the village at the highest point in the Vendée.
